Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz Mayweather: After Ortiz, Pacquiao could be next

NEW YORK — Unbeaten US fighter Floyd Mayweather will end a 16-month layoff against southpaw Victor Ortiz in September but still hopes to give fans a long-sought showdown with Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather, 41-0 with 25 knockouts, will face World Boxing Council welterweight champion Victor Ortiz, 29-2-2 with 22 knockouts, on September 17 at Las Vegas with an eye toward another southpaw, Pacquiao, after that.

"After this fight, if I'm able to negotiate a Pacquiao fight, it could happen," Mayweather said. "(Ortiz) is a southpaw. That could lead to the Pacquiao fight. If it does or it doesn't, I'm not going to stop fighting."

Most of the fights on Mayweather's agenda are legal ones. He faces three court cases, including charges from an incident with an ex-girlfriend that could bring up to 34 years in prison, plus a defamation lawsuit from Pacquiao.

Asked how that federal lawsuit could affect negotiations for a Pacquiao fight, Mayweather said, "I'm not sure at all."

"You go through ups and downs in life. If that's how he feels, things happen. If he wants to go to court for defamation of character, that's up to him."

Pacquiao argues that his reputation was damaged when Mayweather accused him of being a dope cheat in his push to have "Pac-Man" take blood tests close to the date of a fight, something the Filipino star has steadfastly refused but something that is also not required by any US boxing oversight group.

"Hopefully Manny Pacquiao steps up to the plate and takes the test so we can fight," Mayweather said. "I'm waiting for the fight to happen. I'm taking one step at a time."

Ortiz and Mayweather will be undergo extra blood and urine tests beyond usual levels before their fight. Mayweather had similar rules in place before his most recent fight, a victory over Shane Mosley in May of last year.

"I've been missing the sport," Mayweather said. "I'm happy to be back performing for the fans."

Mayweather said he is trying to shrug off the court cases to focus on fighting Ortiz and that because he is a fighter, he might be seen as guilty in incidents involving physical contact before all the facts are given to a jury.

"They are already saying I'm guilty with no photos or pictures of anything," Mayweather said. "I need to see some pictures and see some proof of what I have done. All of this is just hearsay.

"All I need to do is go out there and stay focused and focus on what is in that squared circle."

Mayweather, who said he has played basketball but not worked out in the ring recently, put himself in the champion's shoes with his unbeaten record although it will be only Ortiz who owns a title when they climb into the ring.

"He's trying to dethrone me," Mayweather said. "My job is to go out there and fight like I always do."

De Jong arrives in Manila, rejoins Azkals

Filipino-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong arrived in Manila on Saturday to rejoin the Philippine Azkals for their World Cup qualifier against Kuwait.

De Jong, who played for the national team in the 2010 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup, arrived from Belgium via Hong Kong.

“I think we have a good chance [against Kuwait] because I saw the game last time, especially the game in Rizal,” he said.

He will join Filipino-Danish Jerry Lucena, Filipino-German John Patrick Hinrichsen, and Filipino- Icelandic Ray Jonsson in beefing up the Azkals in the absence of team captain Aly Borromeo and midfielder Stephan Schrock.

Borromeo and Schrock were suspended for 1 game after getting 2 yellow cards each in the first-round tie against Sri Lanka.

De Jong said the Azkals have shown vast improvements in their game as shown by their 4-0 victory over Sri Lanka last week.

“We have a lot of quality in the team. I can see also the other boys, they developed very well. I think we have a big chance to defeat Kuwait,” he said.

De Jong said he has been spending time training in Belgium to maintain his conditioning.

“I've been training with my last team in Belgium to keep fit… I feel great to be back,” said the Fil-Dutch.

The Azkals' away game against Kuwait is on July 23.

The home game will take place 5 days later at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

The Best Live Albums! EVER!!

Does anybody even care about ‘live’ albums anymore? Does anybody these days have the attention span to sit down for an evening and immerse themselves in  a concert experience simulation situation? I suppose the question is, does anybody have the attention span to sit down and just listen to an entire album,Period!? Well this post is assuming that there are those sorts of people left on earth.
In the past, live albums usually were produced for two reasons. That is, to fill in the gap while waiting for the next studio album. Or as a career or specific period overview of the ‘Best Of’ but presented in the novel ‘live album’ form. Sort of to remind everybody of their greatest hits and because of the crowd noises, remind everybody how famous they were(or still are).
But how ‘artistically’ important are these albums? Are they actually necessary? Some bands approach the stage with the idea that they must perform the songs just like they appear on the record, otherwise certain fans will think they’re no good live because it doesn’t sound like the album. “Unless you play that solo note for note just like the record, I’ll think that you suck ‘live’”.  For example-Supertramp-PARIS. I enjoy listening to that album, but is it essential listening? Is it a stand alone Supertramp album or is it just a greatest hits package with crowd noises? I enjoy Pink Floyd-PULSE and also DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER, but they’re so close to the album versions that I consider them to be career retrospectives rather than a unique individual album.
Am I wrong to think this? Well, I’m writing the bloody article here and you’re not!
My personal preference is to think that live and studio are two different mediums and should be approached as such. I don’t think that a group that can reproduce the sound of their album on stage is accomplishing a really great thing(having to use recorded stuff and click tracks). I think that a group should hit the stage with just their instruments and GO! And if they play well and are also good entertainers, an audience shouldn’t feel cheated because it’s not like the record! In fact they should go home having been thoroughly entertained and satisfied.
So,,,The live albums I tend to recommend to people (who are remotely interested) are the ones that are NOT like the original record but are albums that can be considered an integral part of an artist’s catalog. An album that doesn’t sound just like a retrospective, but is a completely different album from anything else they have.
Here are six albums that I absolutely adore. Albums that capture an event(or a few events edited together into an entertaining collection).  There are many more that I will have missed but these ones I’ve arbitrarily chosen for this post!

masama ba magtanong?

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS

The Indiana Pacers have announced that Frank Vogel has become the team’s permanent replacement for Jim O’Brien.
Two league sources, plus an advisory sent out by the team on Tuesday night announcing that Pacers president Larry Bird and Vogel would meet with the assembled media Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. ET, confirmed what has been the worst kept secret it Indiana basketball since the Pacers’ playoff run ended.
Vogel helped guide the Pacers to their first postseason appearance since 2006, guiding them to a 20-18 record to finish the regular season. The Pacers were eliminated by Eastern Conference No. 1 seed Chicago Bulls in five games in the first round, but put up a fight from start to finish against the favored Bulls.
One of the major factors working in Vogel’s favor, per one of those sources, is that he was able to recruit former Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw to join him as the new lead assistant for the Pacers. Shaw, a candidate for several head coaching positions around the league the past two seasons, brings a championship pedigree, as both a player and coach, with him to Indianapolis. Shaw interviewed for the Pacers job in 2007 before O’Brien was hired.
Vogel’s hiring leaves just two other coaching situations unsettled. Kurt Rambis still has not been told of his fate in Minnesota and the Detroit Pistons’ search for John Kuester‘s replacement is ongoing.
